Jake's Coming Out Story

"Love is love and love will always win"

I’m Jake, originally from Brazil and I live in the Netherlands. My coming out wasn’t easy, I always had feelings for girls but I was always scared to come out. Maybe you are asking why?

I am a Brazilian Woman as I already mentioned. Brazil is the number one country that has the most cases of murders of homosexuals. So, you can imagine that it wasn’t easy to come out as gay. I already had relationships with men, but I knew that I was missing something. But how could I come out without fear, without being judged by my family and friends?

I knew that my feelings were stronger for girls and I had to come out. At that point, I already had my son and was living in the Netherlands. I knew it was time to come out but I was still very scared of the consequences. When I met Karin, she gave me all the support I needed. She gave me a family that loves my son and me. Now it’s US against the world. Together we are a team and support each other in every goal and dream we have.

Bryan met Karin when he was 4 and it’s so amazing to see the connection that they have together! He has her as a MOTHER and he is so proud of it. I always say you don’t need to share the same blood to be a parent.

Coming out to my mother was very difficult. She is very catholic, at first she was in shock (actually, I think she always knew, but she still had the hope that it would change someday). But it didn’t… When she knew I was having a relationship with a girl, she said horrible things. That broke my heart. But I choose love. I didn’t think at this point I would do what she wanted but yes, I chose for my happiness. So, I did!

“I can share my family with the world without any fears”

We usually spoke every day and suddenly there were no messages from her, it was very sad. She sent messages to my son but not to me. We didn’t talk for weeks until my sister in law spoke with her and made my mom change her mind. She apologized for every judgment she made and she said she will stand up for me for everything. That made me so happy!

Last year Karin went to Brazil with me for the first time and finally met my family after 3 years. My mother fell in love with her and since then, she blessed our relationship. Today I’m so happy I can share my family with the world without any fears. I’m happy that my family is an inspiration to other families and I hope I can help other families with my story. Love is love and love will always win.

Ally Byer’s Coming Out Story

Unlike many queer youth, I was lucky enough to have a pretty “easy” coming out story. Not that coming out is ever easy for anyone, but the reality is that homophobia from family is a fear for a lot of queer people, but it was never for me. My Aunts are gay. I grew up...
