Kim's Coming Out Story

"Coming out is a never-ending story"

I have been curious about women maybe since I was 15 / 16 years old but it wasn’t like an urgent desire, just curiosity. I had boyfriends as well and these relationships weren’t bad at all but it still wasn’t enough.

When I was 22 I was invited to an exam celebration. That night, I had my first kiss with a woman who was actually not a lesbian. FUN FACT: She asked to kiss me that night and directly said she’s not a lesbian and I answered ‘Yeah, same here. No worries’ – Little did I know. 😀

So it all started from there… I wasn’t just curious anymore and I started dating women online. When I had my first crush, I knew I had to tell my friends and family soon. But that is just freaking scary to do.

My first ‘coming out’ was with one of my workmates. We usually had coffee after work together, just the two of us and we used to talk about everything. That day he asked how my love life was going and so I told him. Fortunately, his reaction was just kind and sweet and no big deal for him. He made lots of jokes that we’d be hunting in the same area now and this eased my mind heaps. I was so glad my first outing wasn’t combined with a horrific reaction.

As things got more serious with my crush (at least from my side), I knew I would have to tell my mum as I still lived at home. She already knew something was going on as I wasn’t home much anymore.

That coming out was quite calm you could say… I reckon she didn’t know what to answer or how to react, so we just sat beside each other and had a beer. Lucky for me, she just took me out one day and then asked about my crush.

With my granny, it was quite similar. I suppose this was my hardest coming out as I love my granny a lot and I didn’t know how she would react. But in the end, she just said ‘you crazy/mad owl’ which she usually says when I’m doing something stupid but in a funny way.

“They somehow celebrated the fact that I’m homosexual”

My most favorite coming out was with my oldest brother and sister in law. We were driving home from a family holiday and as I told them, my sister in law just said to me that she somehow knew it from the beginning and my brother burst out in euphoria about how amazing that would be. They somehow celebrated the fact that I’m homosexual which still is a rare reaction.

There are heaps of coming out stories like this and it is still ongoing, I think it is somehow a never-ending story but it’s much easier now to show who I am and what I like.

I hope this story can help others – your first coming out is one of the hardest but it is totally worth it! And for sure, this is easy to say in a country where it is legal…

Hopefully, our coming out stories are going to be boring in the future as it’s going to be seen as a normal thing. Stay safe guys.
