My names Ashton and I’m a 20-year old transgender male. I’ve been out for about 2 and a half years now, but before I came out as trans I was out as lesbian for a couple of years before I even knew what transgender was. After I found out what transgender was I wanted to wait until I was out of high school before coming out as trans because in high school I got bullied for being lesbian and I was scared to see what people would think of me when I came out as trans.
“My family is full of homophobic / transphobic people”
After I graduated from high school I was out as trans for a year to my close friends and on Instagram. I was terrified to come out to my family because my family is full of homophobic/transphobic people. My mom’s side of my family was more accepting than I expected, but I knew what my dad’s side of the family would think.
A few family members on my dad’s side were accepting, but most of them are not. A lot of my family still calls me she/her and my birth name which I just deal with because I don’t want to argue with them. So, I sort of ignore what they call me because everyone that is close to me calls me what I prefer and that’s all that really matters to me right now.
“If I didn’t have her in my life it would have been a lot harder to come out to my family”
After I came out to my parents I went to my first HRT doctor’s appointment to see if I would be able to start testosterone and I was very excited. My girlfriend came with me to my first appointment because I wanted the most important person in my life to come with me to one of the most life-changing things that has happened. I’m so glad she came with me, she helped me be calm because I was so nervous to go. I’m so glad she’s in my life to help me through the most nerve-racking things in my life, if I didn’t have her in my life it would have been a lot harder to come out to my family.
After I started T my dad didn’t want me in the house anymore, he said I was going to confuse my brothers and he didn’t believe I was actually transgender. So, he kicked me out of the house, and I was living with my girlfriend for about 5-6 months and then my parents begged me to move back home with them.
So, I’m back home with my parents. They don’t really accept me still, they call me my birth name and a girl but my mom’s getting around to calling me her son. Whenever someone asks my mom how many kids she has she says she has 7 boys which is pretty amazing and I’m glad she’s trying.
I’m about a year and a half on T now and I love the changes that came with it. I’m really focused on trying to get top surgery soon and changing my name legally and gender marker because I hate having to wear a binder and I hate showing people my ID.
“I’m way happier with my life since I came out to everyone and it’s made me a more joyful person than I was before”
But, until that happens I’m going to be saving up and try to get donations for my GoFundMe page. I’m way happier with my life since I came out to everyone and it’s made me a more joyful person than I was before.
