Queer Love is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated at every possible chance. Over the years the lack of coverage around LGBTQ+ relationships means there are many uneducated views and stigma, but with the help of some amazing couples, we hope to showcase the beauty and love the resides in the LGBTQ+ community.
Our first couple is SK (she/they) and Hannah (she/her), they met in college when Hannah was a freshman and SK was a senior. They were both dance majors at Point Park University Conservatory of Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, PA. After their first date together, Hannah moved in… in true queer style!
How would you describe love?
Love is absolute comfort, the feeling of bliss when you get to come home at the end of the day to your best friend. The warmth of her hugs. The unwavering support and unconditional respect and kindness for one another. The acceptance of each other’s flaws as well as their strengths.
What makes your relationship special?
Our relationship is special because we mirror each other in many ways while still holding space for our own individual interests. We both come from similar trauma which allows for a deep-rooted understanding of one another.
We also both grew up dancing and then majored in dance/danced professionally for a short time. We got to study abroad in Paris together and perform back up for drag shows as well. It’s been a really cool adventure to share that interest. We also own an online thrift store together and have really similar ideas for what our future family will look like! At the same time though, Hannah’s very passionate about crystals/healing/rollerskating/and holistic health while I love to cook, educate, and DIY craft/hone my interior design skills.
We have a way of complimenting each other’s passions and incorporating them into our day to day lives to enhance each other’s living experiences.
What do we need to do to improve views around love/relationships when it comes to LGBTQ+ topics?
I think the #1 thing that is misunderstood about LGBTQIA+ relationships is that we’re not different from anyone else. We share homes, passions, children, pets, favorite tv shows, and errand running just like everyone else.
I run into a lot of folks who say it must be so “fun” to be with a woman. We must just talk all the time and hang out and shop and paint each other’s nails & stuff. It’s almost as if cis/hetero folks believe that we are best friends living together rather than a true partnership of two people who not only are best friends, but also lovers, partners, and support systems for one another through the highs and lows of life.
I think most of this comes from a binary way of thinking about gender roles and relationship roles, which we completely disregard in our household. Gender is dead. Relationship roles are dead. We have a true partnership through life that we want to be respected and honored the same as anyone else!
