Clothes are a massive representation of how we express ourselves, we wear what suits us best.

What if there was a brand that allows us to break out of society’s norms, whilst looking badass?

If only such thing existed… Surpriseee. Refuse to Conform is what you are looking for. Not only does this amazing brand have high-quality clothes & accessories, you can also look super cool whilst refusing to conform to society’s pressures!

And while this all super amazing, RTC is also re-branding… which only means moreeeee clothes! We caught up with the owner of Refuse to Conform to get all the insights.

Q: Refuse To Conform is an amazing platform & clothing line to break society’s boundaries, where did the idea come from?

Thank you! In 2015 I lived in Spain for 6 months and worked 3 days a week in a local bar, it seemed like everyone we met in Spain worked for themselves and it gave me the idea to start my own business. I figured that I could use my platform on Instagram to create a clothing brand that helped people feel comfortable in being themselves.

So I was sat on our balcony one evening, brainstorming brand names and the phrase ‘Refuse to Conform’ came to me, at first I thought it was way too long to be the name of a brand and then I thought no, it’s straight to the point and it’s summarising my brand in the name itself.

Q: What is your favourite item you have in your new (or old) range?

Oooh this is hard! I love all of the items I sell, but I think my favourite item would have to be the distressed caps I have in the new range!

Q: Refuse to Conform has a massive social following, how do you keep up with all the followers?

I try to keep as active as possible by posting every day and I try my best to respond to direct messages and comments –  it can be quite difficult sometimes though especially with working a full-time job too!

Q: What is the motive behind the relaunch?

To be honest, I felt like the brand needed a complete revamp. I hate to admit it but I was losing interest in it slightly, I get bored of things so easily! I felt it was about time to update the logo and change it up a bit! It’s given me a huge boost and all the motivation back that I felt I’d lost, so I’m really excited!

Q: What is the most exciting thing about the relaunch?

EVERYTHING! Haha no, I think for me it’s releasing brand new products and designs. It’s a risk launching a brand new logo, you never know whether people will like it or not but I think that’s what excites me, it’s like a new challenge. The promotion up to it, trying to get sales etc.

Q: What have you learned through running Refuse to Conform Clothing?

So much! I learn something new every single day. I started Refuse to Conform Clothing with no business experience or anything like that really. The only thing I had was the idea so I’ve learned literally everything I know today just through the day to day experiences of running the brand.

Q: With thousands of followers, it’s easy to say you’re a role model to many. But who is your role model?

Ah, thank you! I have a number of role models and people who I look up to. A lot of them are people I have found through Instagram and some are not relatively well known! Some are, however, for example, Madison Paige, Ruby Rose, and Jesse Sullivan. I follow people who tend to spread positivity and who show the world they aren’t afraid to be themselves.

Q: It’s amazing to see a successful gay woman creating a revolutionary brand. What would you say to those who doubt women and LGBTQ+ individual’s abilities within businesses?

I’ve been lucky as I have amazing friends, family, and customers that have shown me nothing but support with RTC, however, I know that some people do make derogatory comments regarding females and LGBTQ+ people in business. It’s ridiculous as gender and sexuality have nothing to do with your ability to run a business or work within that industry and people shouldn’t even compare the two. As long as someone is willing to put in the work, that’s all that matters.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to come out?

I would say, it really is the biggest relief in the world when you finally get to come out. I feared coming out for so many years so much to the point it used to make me feel sick! I didn’t realize there was such a massive support network for me, not only in the LGBTQ+ community but everyone else in my life too. Being able to love openly is the best feeling ever. I think as long as it’s safe for you to come out, you shouldn’t be afraid because there will always be someone out there who will love and support you for who you are.

Q: The media recently showed Non-Binary individuals in a negative light. What is your opinion on Non-Binary/Genderfluid Individuals?

I think everyone should just be the person they’re comfortable being. Non-binary/Genderfluid individuals are completely valid and no one should feel pressured into being someone they’re not purely to fit in with society’s standards. You’ll never be happy if you’re not being true to yourself so don’t listen to other people and be who you want to be!
