What was ‘Coming out’ like for you?
It was not easy coming out but thankfully my mother didn’t completely hate me. The first person I told was my aunt who was living in Japan at the time. I was only 15 years old. She was far away enough so I felt comfortable sharing that with her.
It took my mom over ten years to fully accept it but she now understands and we have a good relationship.I would do it all the same without the fear. One must love themselves enough not to care what others may think.
What do you feel like society can do to help the youth of the LGBTQ community?
Dialogue is important, especially in the religious community. Our churches must do a better job at teaching acceptance and not ridicule. People are heavily influenced by their community leaders and those leaders have to be more responsible for the lessons they teach.
You’re all role model to the LGBTQ community but who is your role model within the LGBTQ community?
I would say all the club promoters and community activists that create a place for us to be ourselves.
Sometimes people are just natural born stars. Nor is the epitome of that statement. Born and raised in the city of Mt.Vernon,New York; hometown of great actors like Denzel Washington and Phylicia Rashad; Nor was introduced into the entertainment world at the tender of age of 9; being featured in a “Consumer Reports” infomercial for gaming system Sega Genesis.
Since then she’s gone on to be featured in national publications such as Out Magazine and Curve for her involvement in the musical hip hop duo KIN4LIFE. With the success of her hip hop group she’s gone on to performing in countless venues both nationally and internationally gaining recognition amongst her peers and the media.
Along the way, Nor stepped back into the acting scene in 2011, being featured in the feminist play “The Vagina Monologues” and then again in 2016 being featured in indie film, “We Need A Little Christmas” written by B. Danielle Watkins.
Currently Nor is on schedule to release her 5th studio album under the Ropeadope and Artists First Records imprint as well as just wrapping up filming (January 2017) of the hottest new series “3030” also written by Watkins. Her career has been a journey filled with tribulations and triumphs and through it all her “light” still shines.
